Barn Board is Filling a Need

There is a resurgence happening today, a real desire for a return to the building designs and materials of yesteryear. In fact the demand has never been stronger for old growth wood. More and more people are wanting the flooring, furniture, moldings, etc. that can be made from this ancient forest wood.

Our North American county side is dotted with old barns, stables and other wooden structures that could and are being used as a very economical and environmental friendly way to supply this need.

If you are a barn owner and wish to sell your structure, there are a number of things you should take into consideration. When assessing the future value of the material that will be recovered from your building, much will depend on the location, the wood type and it’s overall condition.

You must also be aware of the state of the building and how difficult it will be to get the wood out. In other words how safe will it be to reclaim the wood. Is the structure standing and secure or is it fallen in. Remember it is always safety first when dismantling  and recycling the wood from these old structures.

Once the building is dismantled, the wood is usually sent off to a mill where it will be kiln dried to remove any excess moisture and to  kill any insects that may be living in it. When the wood has finished going though the kiln process it is then sorted, by quality and made ready for market. Here it will be  turned into the flooring, furniture, moldings, etc. that has become so popular in today’s homes.
