How to use STIHL Chainsaw Sharpener: Step-by-Step Guide

Sharpening your chainsaw can seem complicated, but with the STIHL 2 in 1 Chainsaw Sharpener, it’s straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using this efficient tool, perfect for homeowners.

Step 1: Identify Your Chain Size
  • First, check your chain size – it’s usually indicated on the chainsaw bar. For instance, an MS 250 model typically comes with a 0.325 chain, which you should match with the corresponding sharpener size.
Step 2: Secure Your Saw
  • Place your chainsaw in a bench vise for stability. Clamp it down on the bar, ensuring it’s firm but not overly tight to avoid damaging the bar.
Step 3: Level the Saw
  • Adjust the saw’s position so that the bar is parallel to the floor. This might involve placing something under the saw’s base to level it out.
Step 4: Mark Your Starting Tooth
  • With so many teeth on the chain, mark the first one you plan to sharpen using a sharpie. This helps you avoid resharpening teeth.
Sharpening Technique:
  • Position the sharpener: The plastic on the sharpener should align parallel with the chainsaw bar.
  • Sharpen at the right angle: Depending on your bench setup, you’ll either pull the sharpener towards you or push it away at an angle.
  • Dual-action sharpening: The tool sharpens the tooth and lowers the rake simultaneously, ensuring optimal cutting performance.
  • Follow the direction: Sharpen in the direction indicated by the arrow on the tool, generally three passes per tooth.
  • Avoid sharpening in reverse: Lighten pressure when moving back in the opposite direction to prevent double sharpening.
Step 5: Sharpen Every Alternate Tooth
  • Work your way around the chain, sharpening every other tooth in the same direction.
Step 6: Flip and Repeat
  • Once you’ve gone full circle, flip the sharpener and sharpen the remaining teeth in the opposite direction.
Step 7: Final Step Complete the Sharpening Process
  • Now that all teeth are sharpened, your chainsaw should be ready for efficient cutting.

Additional Tips

  • The sharpener has bars to guide your sharpening, making it difficult to make a mistake.
  • Avoid over-grinding the teeth; stick to about three passes per tooth.
  • The sharpener is designed with replaceable parts, so you can simply insert new files as needed, avoiding the need to buy a whole new sharpener.

By following these steps, you’ll find that maintaining your chainsaw’s sharpness is not just easy, but also efficient, ensuring your chainsaw is always in top cutting condition.

I hand sharpen first, using the 2 n 1 sparingly everyother time to tune in the rake. The Stihl replacement flat rake file doesn't last very long when filing 114 and 80 driver length chain. I haven't seen a need to put a 2 n 1 on the T saws low pro chain, they cut very aggressive throughout the chains life.

I've had a couple of these that Husqvarna made for years and they are the cream of the crop for sharpening all six of my saws.

I’ve got saws with three different size chains and have three of these two in one sharpeners. I think they’re fantastic. However, it is my understanding that they are only appropriate for low kickback chains.

Don, I've used these for years they aren't specific to Stihl, I've seen them colored and branded for Stihl, Husqvarna and I now own generic branded ones in blue. I own a battery Echo, a small Craftsman, and both a Husqvarna 55 and 460 using various types of chain, just get the right file size for your chain.
