Seems a bit odd to me that the chimney slips into the stove instead of over the stove top outlet. What's to stop some smoke escaping in between? Logical design is male into female traveling up the chimney in order to prevent smoke escaping into the tent/room.

The way it's done here is pretty standard. Your way would allow creosote to leak from the joints onto the stove top creating a mess and a fire hazard. Doing it this way negates those hazards and the rising draft is sufficient to keep the smoke in the pipe.
