Blaze King Ashford 30: A Detailed Review

Alaska, the Last Frontier. A land of breathtaking beauty, where nature unfurls in its most raw form, is also home to some of the world’s most daunting winters. For many, surviving an Alaskan winter is a testament to their resilience, a tale of human perseverance against the might of nature. Settling into a new home amidst this vast, frozen expanse brought its own set of challenges and revelations.

Blaze King Ashford 30

The long, harsh Alaskan winters have temperatures that average between -20 to -40 degrees Celsius in January and February. Living in a log cabin that’s directly exposed to these icy elements, after constructing the cabin last year, the primary concern was whether it would offer sufficient warmth and coziness during these severe conditions. I am delighted to state that we effortlessly made it through, all thanks to the Blaze King Ashford 30.

Performance Analysis

Efficiency

A standout feature of the Blaze King Ashford 30 is its ability to provide warmth for an impressive 30 hours on a single wood charge. In real-time tests, even after 26.5 hours, I found the coals alive, ready to embrace new wood splits and reignite the warmth.

During an unrelenting cold spell with temperatures plunging to -30 degrees Celsius, the stove demonstrated its exceptional endurance. For weeks, the stove remained active, negating any need to relight it. The consistent warmth provided by the Ashford 30 ensured an environment of unbelievable comfort, even amidst the persistent, bitter cold.

Wood Consumption

A testament to its efficiency, the Ashford 30 facilitated a 30-40% reduction in wood consumption relative to my former high-end stove. This diminished consumption implied fewer trips into the cold to fetch wood. Additionally, I enjoyed the luxury of filling the stove with wood and then leisurely distancing myself from it, confident that the warmth would sustain for a good 8 to 12 hours before necessitating a reload. For many, this might seem like a minor luxury. However, for someone residing here throughout the year, it’s monumental. With other wood stoves, nocturnal refills were a norm, disrupting sleep. But with the Ashford 30, the dreaded midnight wake-ups, where you groggily fetch wood to restock the stove and then struggle to find sleep again, were history.

Consistency

No more waking up in the middle of the night to add wood. The in-built thermostat maintained a steady, comfortable ambiance, a far cry from the wild fluctuations of previous stoves I’ve used.

Clean Burning

During my usage, I noticed that the sooty residue, which often obscures the view in many stoves, was a rare occurrence. Cleaning the window probably three or four times throughout the entire winter of burning wood. Occasionally, the sides would cloud up in the morning, but quickly throwing in some new wood and adjusting the thermostat resulted in all the soot burning off. Some might doubt its capacity to draft properly for swift heat, but as demonstrated, this stove is equipped for it. Following the owner’s manual, you can unlatch the door halfway, ensuring the fire gets the necessary airflow.

Quick Heat and Aesthetics

Not just functional, the stove, with its clear window offering a view of the flames, became the centerpiece of many winter evenings. Its aesthetic value was an added bonus.

Additional Features

Blower Fan Feature

Blower Fan Feature Blaze King Ashford 30

The addition of a blower fan at the stove’s rear was a particularly welcome upgrade. This fan isn’t just one but two distinct blowers combined. Their primary function? To circulate the warm air effectively, ensuring faster and more consistent heating throughout any given space. While I didn’t find much use for it last winter, I predict it’ll become indispensable in the upcoming cold months. Another crucial aspect, especially considering my off-grid lifestyle, is its power efficiency. The fan, even at its peak speed, draws a mere 15 to 25 watts, making it a sustainable choice.

Catalytic Combustor Maintenance

The Blaze King Ashford 30 is as easy to maintain as it is to use. Take the catalytic combustor, for instance. Since its installation, I’ve only needed to clean it twice. And each cleaning process? Remarkably quick, averaging about three minutes. What’s more, even if you aren’t particularly handy, its accessible design ensures that virtually anyone can manage its upkeep with minimal fuss.

Cost-Effectiveness and Efficiency

The Blaze King Ashford 30 is not just another wood stove; it encapsulates the essence of efficiency, both economically and environmentally. While its initial price point might seem on the higher side to some, its comprehensive benefits make it a valuable long-term investment.

Two vital pillars define wood stove efficiency. Firstly, it’s the stove’s ability to generate minimal pollutants, ensuring compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. The Ashford 30 doesn’t just meet these standards; it far surpasses them, positioning Blaze King wood stoves at the forefront of eco-friendly heating solutions.

Cost-Effectiveness and Efficiency Blaze King Ashford 30

The second dimension of efficiency revolves around fuel consumption and heat production. A genuinely efficient stove should burn less fuel while providing extended warmth. Blaze King stoves, with their exceptional burn times and extraordinary heat production, stand out in this regard. They are designed to burn up to a third less wood than competitor brands. This reduced wood consumption translates to tangible benefits: less time, money, and energy spent on wood-related chores, from chopping to loading. And with the bonus of producing less ash, maintenance becomes even more straightforward.

Overall, the Blaze King Ashford 30 seems like a solid choice for those living in harsh winter conditions, offering consistent warmth, efficiency, and safety. However, potential buyers should weigh the initial cost against the long-term benefits before making a decision.

Had one since 2016, great stove. But as with all things, they break. Thermostat finally went. Spent hours looking for the part. Found One supplier at 400 .00. Ridiculous. Apparently a high failure rate item non available. Blaze king should address this problem.

In all fairness things don't last forever. The thermostat is a moving part which will always have more points of failure. Hopefully you can pick up a replacement.
