One of its most impressive features is the advanced anti-vibration system, which I found incredibly effective in reducing fatigue during long work sessions. This design choice is perfect for landowners and farmers who need to handle extended tasks without strain.
Safety is another priority with the MS 271 Chainsaw, thanks to its reliable chain brake. This critical feature provides peace of mind by stopping the chain immediately in case of kickback, ensuring safer operation.

Comparisons and Competitors
The MS 271 stands out from its competitors in several aspects:
Husqvarna 450 Rancher
One of the standout advantages of the Stihl MS 271 FARM BOSS Chainsaw is its exceptional power-to-weight ratio. During extended use, I noticed significantly less fatigue compared to heavier chainsaws, which is a huge benefit for demanding tasks. This feature gives the MS 271 Chainsaw an edge over competitors like the Husqvarna 450 Rancher, which, despite having a similar engine size, weighs more and can feel cumbersome during prolonged use.
Poulan Pro PR5020
A major advantage of the Stihl MS 271 FARM BOSS Chainsaw is its advanced anti-vibration system, which I found to be a game-changer during extended use. This feature significantly reduces operator fatigue, allowing you to tackle longer projects without discomfort.
Echo CS-490
The Stihl MS 271 FARM BOSS Chainsaw stands out for its easy-start system, which I found incredibly convenient. This feature allows for smoother and quicker starts, cutting down the effort typically required to get a chainsaw running.

Its advanced features, such as the anti-vibration system and easy-start mechanism, further enhance its appeal by improving comfort and convenience during use.
However, it’s worth noting that the Stihl MS 271 does have some drawbacks. For some users, the price might feel steep compared to budget chainsaws, and the weight, while manageable, could be a factor during extended sessions.
Despite these considerations, the Stihl Farm Boss Chainsaw remains an excellent option for those who prioritize reliability and performance. Whether you’re cutting firewood, felling trees, or tackling larger projects, this chainsaw delivers dependable results time and again.
Stihl MS 271 Pros and Cons
Pros:
- The MS 271 is designed for heavy-duty tasks, making it a reliable and efficient choice for landowners and farmers.
- This feature reduces user fatigue and ensures a more comfortable experience during extended use.
- The chain brake is a critical safety feature that protects users from potential injury due to kickback.
Cons:
- The MS 271 is more expensive than some of its competitors, but its performance and durability can justify the higher price
- STIHL products are typically only available through authorized STIHL dealers, which may limit purchasing options compared to other brands that are sold through various retailers. However, this exclusivity also ensures you receive expert advice and support when purchasing and maintaining your chainsaw.
- The MS 271 is slightly heavier than some of its competitors, such as the Husqvarna 450 Rancher. However, the chainsaw’s ergonomic design and anti-vibration system help mitigate any potential discomfort caused by the additional weight.
Evolution and Improvements
I’ve seen the evolution and improvements in their products over the years. The STIHL Farm Boss MS 271 20 in. 50.2 cc Gas Chainsaw is no exception, with several enhancements that set it apart from previous models and make it an ideal choice for serious users.
- Enhanced Power and Efficiency: The MS 271 has come a long way from its predecessor, the MS 270. With a 50.2 cc engine that delivers 3.49 hp, the MS 271 boasts a significant increase in power, providing greater cutting performance for demanding tasks. The improved fuel efficiency also allows you to work longer without frequent refueling, which is a great bonus for extended projects.
- Advanced Air Filtration System: One of the key improvements in the MS 271 is the pre-separation air filtration system. This innovative design extends the life of the air filter by separating larger particles before they reach the filter, reducing the need for frequent filter replacements and maintenance. As a result, the MS 271 requires less downtime, which is crucial when working on time-sensitive projects.
- Ergonomic and User-friendly Design: The MS 271 has been redesigned with user comfort in mind. The anti-vibration system has been improved, reducing fatigue during extended use. The ergonomic handle and easy-start system make the chainsaw more comfortable and easier to operate, allowing you to work more efficiently and with greater precision.
- Toolless Fuel and Oil Caps: A small but notable improvement in the MS 271 is the addition of toolless fuel and oil caps. This feature simplifies the refueling and oil change process, saving you time and effort while ensuring your chainsaw is always ready for the task at hand.
- Improved Chain Tensioning System: The side-access chain tensioner in the MS 271 allows for quick and easy chain adjustments without the need for additional tools. This feature not only streamlines the adjustment process but also reduces the risk of over-tightening, prolonging the life of your chainsaw’s components.
Conclusion
The Stihl MS 271 FARM BOSS Chainsaw stands out as an excellent choice for landowners and farmers seeking a powerful, reliable, and fuel-efficient tool for a wide range of tasks. Its user-friendly design, advanced anti-vibration system, and consistent performance make it a leader in its class.
While it may come with a higher price tag and slightly more weight than some competitors, the Stihl MS 271’s durability, efficiency, and features outweigh these minor drawbacks. For anyone looking for a dependable, high-performing chainsaw, the Stihl Farm Boss Chainsaw is a worthwhile investment that delivers on its promises.

March 25, 2024 6:19 amPurchased a Stihl 251 the summer of 2023; my fourth Stihl, over the past 40 years. If you can start it, it works great, but I have never had this much trouble starting a chainsaw. It fuel locks within a couple of pulls and there is significant resistance to the pull start. In contrast my Husqvarna 385XO (85cc) starts without hesitation and the pull without much resistance since it has a pressure release valve that can be activated when starting. Given my experience with this farm boss, I would not buy it again.

May 4, 2023 7:27 pmMy old 041Farm Boss was the beast for a 20 inch saw.. would cut circles around saws comparable to it in size and cubic in. Always started even in the coldest weather conditions. Was simple to maintenance also.would cut 40 to 50 cord season after season. Was always my first choice to take to the woods.Till one day it took legs and disappeared from my shed. Never did fid out where it went. Sure do miss the the old dependable beast. That first Stihl has sold me on their saws ever since and have not gone astray to this day . About to go get me a new 271 Farm Boss.

May 3, 2023 2:55 pmI am very much interested in buying this your Chainsaw Product. How Much does it cost to have One? Thanks Once Again.
Bought a MS 271, had starting issues, took to the shop, mechanic made couple carburetor adjustments, seems to be adjusted very lean. To start full choke, when it pops go to half choke very critical that one does this, it'll flood real easy. Run ethanol free 90+ octane fuel. Use Stihl synthetic two stroke oil. Drain fuel out and run engine till it quits if one is going to store for over three months.
