The STIHL 041 Farm Boss chainsaw, a creation of Andreas STIHL AG & Co., stands as a hallmark of durability and raw power in the realm of chainsaw craftsmanship. Manufactured between 1967 and 1986 in West Germany, this robust 61cc engine saw has carved its legacy into the annals of forestry and woodworking history.
Renowned for its formidable performance and engineered to prioritize sheer cutting force over modern amenities, the 041 Farm Boss has earned its place as a revered model among chainsaw enthusiasts. Despite its vintage design, it garners widespread acclaim for its reliability, making it a prized possession rather than a mere relic. This introduction to the 041 Farm Boss reveals why it remains an iconic piece of STIHL’s storied lineage, celebrated for its endurance and the classic charm of old saw features.
Features of the STIHL 041 Farm Boss
- Engine Displacement: 61 ccm (3.72 cu. in.), powering through tasks with ease.
- Construction: Die-cast magnesium body, offering durability without excessive weight.
- Handlebar System: Rigid, providing a solid grip for one-man operation.
- Air Filter System: Nylon mesh cartridge, ensuring clean air intake for optimal performance.
- Ignition System: Initially offered with a Bosch flywheel type, with later versions boasting electronic ignition for reliable starts.

Performance and Usability
Despite its vintage status, the 041 Farm Boss delivers exceptional performance, particularly in tasks like firewood cutting, where its torque and grunt shine. It’s a chainsaw that demands respect and a willingness to engage with its raw, unfiltered power delivery. The lack of modern features like a chain brake in the earlier versions or the substantial vibrations does not detract from its appeal but rather adds to the charm of operating a piece of STIHL’s history.
Stihl 041 Pros and Cons

Maintenance Tips and Preservation
Maintaining and preserving a vintage chainsaw like the STIHL 041 Farm Boss requires a thoughtful approach that respects its age while ensuring it remains functional and reliable. Here are some tailored maintenance tips and preservation strategies:
Routine Maintenance
- After each use, clean the chainsaw to remove sawdust, dirt, and any plant matter. Pay special attention to the air intake and cooling fins to prevent overheating.
- Sharpen the chain regularly to maintain optimal cutting efficiency. Check the tension of the chain before use, as an improperly tensioned chain can damage the saw.
- Ensure the chain oil reservoir is filled with a high-quality bar and chain oil before each use. Regularly check the oil pump and adjust it as necessary to ensure proper lubrication.
- Clean the nylon mesh air filter regularly with a soft brush or by washing it in soapy water. A clean air filter is crucial for maintaining engine performance.
- Inspect the spark plug periodically for signs of wear or fouling. Clean the electrode with a wire brush or replace the spark plug if it’s worn or damaged.
Long-Term Preservation
- When storing the chainsaw for extended periods, drain the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops to clear the fuel system. Store the chainsaw in a dry, dust-free environment to prevent rust and corrosion.
- Apply a light coat of oil to metal surfaces, including the chain and bar, to prevent rust during storage.
- If your model uses a battery for the ignition system, remove the battery if it won’t be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and corrosion.
Sourcing Replacement Parts
- For replacement parts, seek out suppliers specializing in vintage or discontinued chainsaw parts. Online forums and communities dedicated to chainsaw collectors can be invaluable resources for finding specific parts.
- Some parts may no longer be available. In such cases, a skilled machinist may be able to fabricate replacement parts, though this should be a last resort due to potential safety implications.
Safety Precautions for Vintage Chainsaws
- The STIHL 041 Farm Boss does not come equipped with a chain brake, a safety feature found on modern chainsaws. Always be mindful of kickback, and use both hands to maintain control of the saw at all times.
- Extended use can lead to fatigue due to vibrations. Use anti-vibration gloves and take frequent breaks to minimize the risk of vibration-related conditions.
Safety and Operational Precautions
Operating a vintage saw like the 041 Farm Boss requires adherence to safety standards, some of which have evolved significantly since its introduction. While it lacks modern safety features like chain brake systems, users can still operate the 041 safely by wearing appropriate protective gear, including gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection. Understanding and respecting the saw’s power and operational quirks are crucial for safe use. Users should also be mindful of the saw’s lack of anti-vibration technology, taking regular breaks to minimize fatigue and vibration exposure.
Conclusion: A Chainsaw Worth Preserving
The STIHL 041 Farm Boss is more than just a chainsaw; it’s a piece of forestry history. Its robust performance and simplicity appeal to those who appreciate the mechanical purity of vintage tools. While it may not have the comfort features of today’s chainsaws, its power and reliability remain undisputed. For the right price, it’s a worthy addition to any collection, and for those fortunate enough to own one, it’s a legacy to cherish and preserve.
FAQs
- What makes the STIHL 041 Farm Boss a collector’s item, and how does its value compare to modern chainsaws?
The STIHL 041 Farm Boss is considered a collector’s item due to its historical significance as one of the first chainsaws to introduce features like anti-vibration and electronic ignition. Its robust design and durability also contribute to its value. While it may not match the efficiency and ergonomics of modern chainsaws, its craftsmanship and place in chainsaw evolution give it a unique value, especially among enthusiasts of vintage tools. - Can I use modern chainsaw oils and fuels in the STIHL 041 Farm Boss, or do I need special additives?
You can use modern chainsaw oils and fuels in the 041 Farm Boss, but it’s crucial to adhere to the recommended fuel-oil ratio of 40:1. Modern two-stroke oils are generally compatible and can offer better protection and performance. However, considering its age, using a fuel stabilizer with regular grade fuel can help prevent carburetor issues related to ethanol blends. - How do I adjust the carburetor on my STIHL 041 Farm Boss for optimal performance?
Adjusting the carburetor on the 041 Farm Boss requires a careful balance between the idle, low, and high-speed screws. Start by ensuring the saw is clean and the air filter is not clogged. Adjust the idle screw so the saw runs smoothly without engaging the chain, then fine-tune the low and high-speed screws for optimal performance at running and full throttle. It’s often recommended to seek professional help for precise adjustments if you’re unfamiliar with the process. - What are the signs that my STIHL 041 Farm Boss needs a major repair or overhaul?
Signs that your 041 Farm Boss might need major repair include significant power loss, excessive smoke, unusual noises, or difficulty starting that persists despite routine maintenance. A decrease in cutting efficiency that isn’t resolved by chain sharpening or replacement could also indicate internal wear or damage requiring professional attention. - How do I safely store my STIHL 041 Farm Boss for the winter or long periods of inactivity?
For long-term storage, thoroughly clean the chainsaw and apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust. Drain the fuel tank and run the engine dry to clear the fuel system. Store the chainsaw in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. If possible, remove the chain and bar to relieve tension and store them separately after applying a protective oil coating. - Are there modern safety features that can be retrofitted to the STIHL 041 Farm Boss to make it safer to use?
Due to its design and age, retrofitting modern safety features like a chain brake might not be feasible or safe. Just cleaned up the 041AV/electronic, I believe is a 1980 (bought it used in 81). It's a great saw, got the carb rebuilt once and replaced the lower AV rubber about 2 or 3 years ago (got the part at stihl Toronto), and just going to use her for abit of work....should fire up on the 7-9 pulls...love that Stihl

February 17, 2024 2:27 pmI have 3 041's 1 is an older model AV the other 2 are 041 Farm Boss non AV. All 3 saws were given to me and I rebuilt them. I kept the AV and 1 of the Farm Boss stock and I modified/ported the other Farm Boss. They are awesome saws with a good power band and gobs of torque for a 61cc saw. I run a 20 on mine but they will easily pull a 24 as long as you keep the chain sharp.

I bought my 041 new, always mixed the oil on the rich side. Has compression just like it was new, pulled the muffler recently to check the piston for scratches or scuffing, not a line or scratch anywhere on the piston. Put a Tillotson carb kit in it recently and a new bar and chain and filed and set the points ,still cuts like crazy. The only thing it does not have is anti vibe which it really needs, so I put 1/4” foam rubber on the handles, big improvement. These saws are built to last forever.
