Design and Assembly
The DEWALT DCPS620M1 pole saw comes in three main components, each approximately 42 inches long, making it impressively portable. The assembly begins with the handle, which features a safety trigger that must be released before operation—ensuring it doesn’t turn on unexpectedly. Next, the optional extension piece can be added between the handle and the cutting section.
Including this extends the reach by an additional 42 inches, but even without it, the tool is fully functional for closer cuts. The cutting section boasts an 8-inch chainsaw blade equipped with a guard designed to maneuver loose branches out of the cutting path, enhancing safety and efficiency. Assembly is straightforward: align, connect, and secure with a tightening sleeve, ensuring a stable and robust tool ready for action.
Performance and Usage
Once assembled, the pole saw stands about 7 feet long, providing an 11 to 12-foot reach for an average person. With the extension piece, it reaches about 10.5 feet, extending the total reach up to 15 feet when including user height—ideal for tackling those higher branches.
Before use, it’s essential to fill the oil reservoir with bar and chain oil, supporting the auto-oiler system that maintains the chain lubrication during cuts. This feature is crucial for both the longevity of the chain and smooth, continuous operation.
Cutting Capability
The DEWALT pole saw doesn’t just trim branches; it brings significant power to each cut. Ideal for branches up to four inches in diameter, the saw’s brushless motor supports up to 96 cuts per 4-amp-hour battery charge on 4×4 pressure-treated pine. Whether it’s a thick limb or fine trimming, the saw operates best at high RPMs—speed up before cutting for optimal results.
Features and Ergonomics
The ergonomic design includes a comfort grip handle that makes it easier to hold and maneuver. Its reduced kickback bar and chain enhance safety, while the built-in metal bucking strip and tree hook simplify removing cut branches, making your work clean and efficient. The tool’s weight of 8.4 pounds (without the battery) adds to its maneuverability without sacrificing power.

Maintenance and Care Details
To ensure your DEWALT DCPS620M1 20V MAX XR Cordless Pole Saw remains in top working condition, following a routine maintenance schedule is essential. Here’s a detailed guide on how to maintain and care for your pole saw, focusing on cleaning the chain, oil refills, and troubleshooting common issues:
Cleaning the Chain
- Always make sure the pole saw is turned off and the battery is removed before starting any maintenance.
- After each use, clean the chain and bar to remove debris and sawdust. Use a soft brush or cloth to gently remove particles.
- Periodically, it’s beneficial to perform a deeper clean. Remove the chain and bar from the saw to clean them thoroughly. Use a degreaser if necessary to remove stubborn oil and sap. Rinse with water if you use a solvent, and dry completely before reassembling.
- After cleaning, apply a light machine oil to the chain and bar to prevent rust.
Oil Refills
- Before each use, check the oil level in the reservoir. The DEWALT DCPS620M1 has an auto-oiling system, but it’s crucial to ensure there’s always enough oil for effective lubrication.
- Refill the oil reservoir whenever the level is low. Use bar and chain oil recommended by DEWALT to ensure optimal performance and protection of the saw’s moving parts.
- Do not overfill the oil reservoir to avoid leaks. Always wipe away any spilled oil from the saw’s body to maintain a clean, safe working surface.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- If the chain slips off the bar or seems loose, turn off the saw and remove the battery. Check the tension adjustment and tighten the chain if necessary. Refer to the user manual for specific instructions on adjusting the chain tension.
- If the saw isn’t cutting as expected, the chain might be dull or damaged. Inspect the chain for worn or damaged links and teeth. Replace the chain or have it professionally sharpened.
- Ensure the battery is fully charged and properly inserted. Check for any debris or obstructions in the chain or mechanism that might prevent the saw from operating.
- Unusual vibration could be due to an unbalanced bar or a loose chain. Check that all parts are securely fastened and the chain is evenly adjusted.
- If the saw overheats, stop using it immediately and allow it to cool down. Check for a lack of lubrication or a buildup of debris that might be causing extra friction.
Price and Accessories
Priced at $229.99, the DEWALT pole saw kit includes a 4-amp-hour battery and a charger, offering great value for both DIY enthusiasts and professional users. Unfortunately the aluminum upper pole cannot handle the head weight and sawing. Mine bent, when cutting you can see the upper poke going into the head deforming! DeWalt needs to beef up the upper head pole
There is a threaded sleeve that holds the two poles together. It comes loose during operation. This causes the electrical connection to the motor to be intermittent. If your motor starts cutting out, tighten the threaded sleeve. Also, I don't fill the oil reservoir. It leaks too much. I apply oil to the chain guide with an oil can. Don't let the chain guide go dry.
