I know how important it is to have a reliable chainsaw when processing firewood. That’s why I’ve put together this comprehensive review of the best Husqvarna chainsaw for firewood. Husqvarna is a well-known and reputable brand in the chainsaw industry, and they offer a wide range of chainsaw models for various applications. In this review, I’ll share my personal experience and quantitative measurements, discuss the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.
After extensive research and personal use, I’ve concluded that the Husqvarna 455 Rancher is the best chainsaw for firewood. Its performance, durability, and ease of use set it apart from competitors.
The Husqvarna 455 Rancher is powered by a 55.5cc engine, providing ample power for cutting firewood with a 20-inch bar and chain. This chainsaw has a fuel consumption rate of 437 g/kWh, which is relatively efficient for a chainsaw of its size. Additionally, the 455 Rancher has a maximum chain speed of 65.62 ft/s, allowing for quick and efficient cuts.
What sets the 455 Rancher apart from competitors is the X-Torq engine technology, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions. This feature not only makes the chainsaw more environmentally friendly, but it also saves you money on fuel in the long run.
Another notable aspect of the 455 Rancher is its LowVib feature, which minimizes vibration and reduces fatigue during prolonged use. This is particularly important when processing large amounts of firewood, as it allows for a more comfortable and efficient experience.
How about its competitors?
Let’s take a closer look at some of the key competitors of the Husqvarna 455 Rancher in the chainsaw market:
- Stihl MS 271 Farm Boss
The Stihl MS 271 Farm Boss is a popular choice among users for its power and durability. It features a 50.2cc engine with a 20-inch bar and chain, making it suitable for firewood-cutting tasks. The MS 271 utilizes Stihl’s IntelliCarb compensating carburetor, which maintains a consistent fuel-to-air ratio for optimal performance. However, it lacks some of the eco-friendly features of the Husqvarna 455 Rancher, such as the X-Torq technology. The MS 271 also weighs slightly more than the 455 Rancher, which may be a drawback for some users.
- Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf
The Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf is another reliable option for firewood processing. It comes equipped with a 59.8cc engine and a 20-inch bar and chain, making it powerful enough for demanding cutting tasks. The CS-590 features a G-Force Engine Air Pre-Cleaner, which helps reduce engine wear and prolong the chainsaw’s lifespan. However, it doesn’t offer the same level of vibration reduction as the Husqvarna 455 Rancher’s LowVib system, which could lead to increased fatigue during extended use.
- Poulan Pro PR5020
The Poulan Pro PR5020 is a more budget-friendly alternative for those looking to process firewood. With a 50cc engine and a 20-inch bar and chain, it offers a decent cutting capacity for most firewood tasks. The PR5020 features an OxyPower engine, which provides extra power and lower emissions. However, it’s worth noting that the build quality and durability may not be on par with the Husqvarna 455 Rancher. Additionally, it lacks some of the advanced features, such as the X-Torq technology and LowVib system, that make the 455 Rancher stand out.
Alternative
Comparing the 455 Rancher to other models, the Husqvarna 440e may be a suitable alternative for users with lighter firewood-cutting needs. The 440e has a smaller engine (40.9cc) and a shorter bar length (18 inches), making it more lightweight and maneuverable. However, for heavy-duty firewood processing, the 455 Rancher remains the top choice.
Feature | Husqvarna 455 Rancher | Husqvarna 440e |
---|---|---|
Engine Displacement | 55.5cc | 40.9cc |
Power Output | 3.49 hp | 2.4 hp |
Bar Length | 20 inches | 18 inches |
Chain Speed (Max) | 65.62 ft/s | 56.89 ft/s |
Weight (without cutting gear) | 13.2 lbs | 9.78 lbs |
Fuel Consumption | 437 g/kWh | 504 g/kWh |
X-Torq Technology | Yes | Yes |
LowVib System | Yes | Yes |
SmartStart | Yes | Yes |
Air Injection | Yes | Yes |
Quick Chain Adjustments | No | Yes (tool-less) |
Price Range | $$$ | $$ |
This comparison chart highlights the main differences between the Husqvarna 455 Rancher and the Husqvarna 440e. The 455 Rancher offers a more powerful engine, longer bar length, and faster chain speed, making it better suited for heavy-duty firewood processing tasks. On the other hand, the 440e is lighter, has a toolless chain adjustment feature, and is more budget-friendly, making it a suitable option for lighter firewood-cutting needs. Both models share common features such as X-Torq technology, LowVib system, SmartStart, and air injection, which contribute to their overall performance and user-friendliness.
Benefits and drawbacks
Pros:
- Powerful 55.5cc engine suitable for heavy-duty firewood processing
- 20-inch bar and chain for efficient cutting
- X-Torq engine technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions
- LowVib feature minimizes vibration for increased comfort
Cons:
- Heavier than some other models, which may be a drawback for some users
- May be overkill for those with lighter firewood cutting needs
Conclusion
Based on my expertise and experience, the Husqvarna 455 Rancher is the best chainsaw for firewood processing. Its powerful engine, efficient cutting, and user-friendly features make it a top choice for those who need a reliable and durable chainsaw.

May 9, 2023 3:45 amI won't buy any chainsaw that's labeled a ranch or farm model. They're typically much heavier and less powerful for the size. Your better off going u a size if you need that kind of power. Or going smaller unless you cut a lot of wood on a regular basis. I have sn old Husky 266 XP with a 28" bar and semi-chisel toothxhain for tge larger wood. My little 170 still is what I use the majority of the time. I like a 16" bar on any saw I'm cutting firewood with Most of tge time that's enough bar and it adds a lot of power and increases the speed tremendously. I did have to replace the stock jets in tge 170 and it screams now and has been for tge last 3 or 4 years.

May 5, 2023 5:26 amHusky's a good chainsaw the shop in our town is getting rid of the franchise because they cannot get parts I think it's a shame it's pretty bad when you buy brand new saws and now you can't get parts from or service

May 5, 2023 4:49 amI can’t get parts for my Husky snowblower either. Bought in 2009. Parts no longer available, ever.

May 9, 2023 1:15 am450 and a 455 Rancher Both saws perform flawlessly. However both saws leak oil profusely. Over a week to 10 days the oil reservoir will simply leak out. Both saws did this after the first few uses and have continued to do so after 3 years of use. My dealer tells me to get use to it as Huskies are known for this. A loyal user/owner but a disappointed one also.

May 5, 2023 4:47 amI have owned stihl ms271and 026 and husky 450 in the 50 cc class all good saws i also run a 61 with a big bore 72 cc (weight is about the same as a 455) and a 372xp non x torc. I didnt feel bad for selling the ms 271 i did miss the 026 and still have the husqvarna saws they just perform great.. my uncle has been cutting wood with the same 455 for over 25 years he wont use a different saw. Good oil and gas go a long ways.. and clean them.

May 5, 2023 12:30 amI have both. I bought the 440 after the 455 because most of the firewood I cut is lodgepole, with a lot of branches. I only use the 455 to cut larger (over 15") trunks. There's 4 pounds difference between the two with fluids, bars & chains on. The 455 is like a diesel full sized truck vs 6 cylinder compact 440. One 450 would be the best option.

May 3, 2023 9:04 pmI've had 3 455 ranchers and was thinking going to a 460 but these work so good and are not difficult to work on. Im down to 2 as one of my friends liked it so much he traded me his 394xp for it ( needed a little work)

May 3, 2023 2:29 pmThe 61 is a lot better than the 55
I have a Husky 350 and a Husky 460. Both Saws are work horses! I cut mainly Red oak and some white and bur oak. I pretty much cut all year except winter. I have used McCulloch and Echo saws until I purchased my Husky 350. I fell in love with the Husky and retired the other saws and bought the 460. I am sold on Husqvarna products!

May 2, 2023 1:21 pmI had the 455 for 1yr before selling it as it has incredibly unreliable for me. I have a 550xp now and there really isn't a comparison. The 550xp is a much nicer firewood saw. I use a 372xp as a big wood saw.

May 2, 2023 12:36 pmBest firewood saw by far is the 550xp. 555 is also a great firewood saw but it gets heavy. I could run that 550 all day the balance just feels right

May 2, 2023 10:23 amThis is a good choice although I've been using a 372 XP with a 24 inch bar for 23 years now and it still runs excellent. The Husqvarna is a good choice for your chainsaw needs no matter how much wood you need to cut

May 3, 2023 12:53 amI was interested in the 550xp how does that fair up to the 455 rancher?

May 2, 2023 12:14 amI'm using the 455 now for close on 10 years. I've the 281xp for heavier work but the 455 "farmers saw" as sold to me is an excellent piece of kit. Cannot fault it

May 1, 2023 10:44 pmI have a Husqvarna 365 for 20 years always started never a problem I'll put it up to any saw

May 1, 2023 10:38 pmThat is the by far, the best and most informative chainsaw review that I’ve read before, the wood I cut is mostly achievable with a 14 inch bar, what are your choices in this range of saw. Regard’s Peter

May 1, 2023 8:05 pmHave been cutting wood for over 43 years. Been using mostly Stihl saws. The last Stihl, a 361, has been hard starting from day 1. I bought the husky 455 rancher. Very easy to start and with plenty of power. It is just the right saw for an 81. year old man.
I have around 20 saws I just recently bought the ms271 and what a pile of garbage worsted 50 cc saw I own takes like 40 pulls to get running oiler doesn't work takes forever to cut through through a 15 inch log spruce soft wood for the people out there that doesn't know I have only two Husqvarna saw a XP 288 88cc and a 445 50.2cc a 67 Canadian power machine 270 95cc two Remington's one McCollin and the rest of them are Stihl from 30 cc up to 89cc and my favorite saw is the ms260 with a 18 bar love that saw cut anything and everything but unfortunately I am waiting on a big bore kit to come in so I can rebuild it it's time
