Wood stoves have been warming homes for centuries, each bringing its unique touch of charm, efficiency, and functionality. In this tapestry of designs and models, one stove has managed to captivate audiences in recent times: the Buck Stove Model 81 with its arresting black door. This review offers an in-depth look at this model, shedding light on why it’s quickly becoming a favorite.
Buck Stove Model 81 Wood Stove Personal Experience
Having lived in colder climates for a good portion of my life, I’ve encountered my fair share of wood stoves. But nothing quite prepared me for the Buck Stove Model 81 with Black Door. From the moment I set my eyes on it, it felt like a fusion of tradition and modernity. The matte black door, so elegantly designed, immediately drew my attention, promising both form and function.
Installing it was relatively straightforward, though I’d advise anyone to get professional help, given its robust build. Once set up, the magic truly began. Lighting it up was easy, and the adjustable damper gave me a good degree of control over the flame and heat intensity. The clear viewing window was more than just functional – there’s something inherently soothing about watching the flames dance, especially on a cold winter evening.
As for the heating, the Model 81 outdid itself. My home, which spans a little over 2,700 square feet, was enveloped in a consistent warmth. No cold pockets, just a comforting, even heat. Moreover, as someone who’s environmentally conscious, knowing it was EPA-certified made me feel at ease. Efficient combustion, fewer emissions – it was a win-win.
However, no product is without its quirks. Regular maintenance was a must. I found myself cleaning it and removing ash at least once a week, ensuring it operated optimally. But this slight inconvenience was a small price to pay for the coziness it offered.
All in all, the Buck Stove Model 81 was more than just a heating appliance for me. It was a centerpiece, a conversation starter, and a reliable companion during the coldest of days.

Installation Considerations for Buck Stove Model 81
The Model 81, renowned for its seamless user experience, does pose certain challenges in the installation phase due to its intricate and robust design. Here’s a deep dive into its installation requirements:
1. Proper Venting is Paramount – The venting system plays a pivotal role in the stove’s overall efficiency and safety. The Model 81 can be connected to an existing chimney or a new venting system. However, a few points need emphasis:
- If connecting to an older chimney, it might require relining with a stainless steel liner for better compatibility and safety.
- For those establishing a new venting route, ensure it adheres to the manufacturer’s guidelines regarding size, type, and configuration.
- Regularly inspect and clean the venting system to prevent creosote buildup, a potential fire hazard.
2. Clearances from Combustibles – The Model 81, like all wood stoves, emits intense heat during operation. Therefore, maintaining specific clearances from walls and other flammable materials is vital:
- Follow the manufacturer’s recommended clearances diligently. These guidelines are based on thorough testing and ensure user safety.
- Using heat shields or wall protectors can sometimes reduce clearance requirements, but always refer to the manual before making such decisions.
3. Non-combustible Floor Base – Ensuring the stove stands on a non-combustible base isn’t just an aesthetic choice—it’s a safety mandate:
- This base, often referred to as a hearth pad, should extend beyond the stove’s dimensions. This ensures any stray embers or ash that fall during loading or tending don’t pose a fire risk.
- There are numerous hearth pad materials available, such as tile, brick, or metal. Choose one that complements your interior but also meets safety standards.
4. Professional Installation – A Worthwhile Investment? – Given the complexities involved in setting up the Model 81 correctly:
- Many homeowners lean towards hiring professionals who are well-acquainted with wood stove installations. These experts ensure that the stove operates at its peak efficiency while minimizing potential risks.
- Even if you’re a DIY enthusiast, consulting with a professional or at least having them inspect your installation can be a prudent choice.

The stove is on my back porch and my local stove installer ordered a stove kit and plans to put the stove in my fireplace on friday12 october. We look forward to the first good fire over the weekend.
