Features of the Ryobi 40V HP Chainsaw

The Ryobi 40V HP Chainsaw comes equipped with a 40V lithium-ion battery (sold separately), a brushless motor for increased durability and efficiency, and a 14-inch bar and chain. These specs make it suitable for a variety of tasks, from small branches to moderate logs, making it a great all-around tool. Here are some standout features I found particularly helpful:

Ryobi 40V HP
  • Brushless Motor: Brushless motors generally provide more power, longer lifespan, and lower maintenance. During my tests, this feature proved crucial in delivering consistent cutting power.
  • Automatic Oiler: This feature ensures continuous lubrication on the chain, helping it glide smoothly and extend the lifespan of both the bar and chain.
  • Tool-Free Chain Tensioning: Adjusting the chain tension is as simple as turning a knob—no additional tools needed. It saved me time on tasks that required frequent tension adjustments.
  • Variable Speed Trigger: This offers more control over cutting speed, a handy feature for navigating different types of wood or delicate cuts.
  • Safety Chain Brake: A built-in mechanical kickback brake is a significant safety feature, protecting users in case of chain kickbacks.

Ryobi 40V Chainsaw Performance

One of the biggest questions around battery chainsaws is whether they match up to gas-powered models. After several tests, I can confirm that this 40-volt Ryobi chainsaw is a solid contender. In my backyard, I faced a few heavy-duty jobs that tested the chainsaw’s power. One involved cutting through a large maple tree branch, about 10 inches thick. Normally, I’d expect a cordless chainsaw to stall on thicker wood, but this Ryobi cut through it in about 15 seconds, thanks to its chain speed of 32 ft/s.

For a cordless chainsaw, this is impressive. Not only does it compete with many gas chainsaws on power, but it also offers the benefit of no fumes, quieter operation, and less maintenance. If you’re working in residential areas or simply want a low-noise tool, this chainsaw offers the best of both worlds—good power without the mess of gas engines.

How Long Can You Cut with the Ryobi 40V Chainsaw?

Battery life is crucial for any cordless tool, and I was particularly interested in how long the Ryobi 40V chainsaw would last on a single charge. During my first round of testing, I managed about an hour of moderate cutting before the battery required recharging. This was enough to finish most of my yard tasks in one go. For heavier cutting jobs, you may notice battery life decreasing slightly, but even then, you can expect around 45–50 minutes of runtime.

One thing I appreciated was that the power didn’t just cut out abruptly. Instead, the chainsaw gradually slowed down, giving me enough time to wrap up and charge the battery. For users with multiple Ryobi tools, the Ryobi 40V battery system is a plus, as you can swap batteries between compatible tools, extending your overall runtime if you have a backup battery.

Weight and Handling

At 8.6 lbs without the battery, this chainsaw is slightly heavier than some other cordless options. When I first started using it, I didn’t feel the weight, but after about 30 minutes, I started noticing some strain, especially when cutting above shoulder height. That said, the weight comes from its solid build and powerful motor, and in my experience, this trade-off is worth it for the level of performance you get.

Ryobi 40V HP

Ergonomics: The handle design is comfortable, allowing for a good grip, which helps distribute the weight more evenly. This was a noticeable improvement from my older chainsaw, where the balance felt off and made control difficult. Ryobi did well here, making sure the chainsaw feels stable and secure in hand, even for less experienced users.

Why the Tool-Free Chain Tensioning and Automatic Oiler Matter

Maintenance can be a hassle with some chainsaws, but the Ryobi 40V HP Chainsaw makes things easier. The tool-free chain tensioning system was a major plus during my tests. I didn’t need to fumble with a wrench or stop for extended periods; instead, I just adjusted the knob and continued. This small feature saved me time, and I appreciated it on larger jobs where the chain occasionally needed re-tensioning.

The automatic oiler is another convenient feature, especially if you’re new to chainsaws or want to avoid the hassle of manually applying oil. It kept the chain running smoothly and prevented overheating, which is important for longevity. I also noticed less chain wear and smoother cuts, as the oiler worked continuously in the background.

I own 2 of the 40 volt chainsaws, and I was surprised at the power. They aren't as fast as a gasoline saw, but easier to use, I cut 6 to 12 inch oak fire wood with it and it works outstanding, my only complaint is that my older saw will not allow me to use the new 40 volt batteries due to their larger size.
