Decision-Making Factors

When deciding whether the Westinghouse 9500 Generator is the right fit for your needs, several key factors should be considered. The primary factor to weigh is the frequency of power outages in your area. If you experience blackouts relatively often, investing in a generator of this caliber is a wise decision. Additionally, consider the duration of outages; the extended run time of this generator ensures that you won’t need to refuel frequently.

Portability is another vital factor. If you require a generator that’s highly mobile and easy to transport, smaller models may be more suitable. However, if reliability and performance are your top priorities during outages, the Westinghouse 9500 Generator is hard to beat. Finally, think about the specific appliances and devices you need to power during outages, as this generator’s versatility in outlet options can be a determining factor. Overall, the Westinghouse 9500 Generator is a top choice for homeowners who demand uninterrupted power during outages and value user-friendly operation and robust performance.

Safety Use Guidelines

  1. Location Matters: Where you place your generator is the first crucial consideration. I’ve found that a well-ventilated, outdoor area away from living spaces is the best choice. Ensure there’s ample space around the generator for proper ventilation and to prevent the accumulation of dangerous exhaust fumes.
  2. Grounded and Stable: The Westinghouse 9500 Generator is a heavy piece of machinery. To prevent accidents, it’s essential to place it on a stable, level surface. Using a dedicated generator pad or a flat, dry area can help ensure it doesn’t tip over during operation.
  3. Fuel Safety: Gasoline is the lifeblood of your generator, but it can also be a safety hazard. Always store your fuel in approved containers away from the generator. Refuel only when the generator is switched off and has cooled down to prevent any accidental ignition.
  4. Electrical Connections: Proper electrical connections are a crucial part of generator safety. Never overload the generator by plugging in too many devices. The Westinghouse 9500 Generator features various outlets, so be sure to use the appropriate ones for your specific needs. Extension cords should be of high quality and rated for outdoor use.
  5. Regular Maintenance: Maintaining your generator is not just about performance but also about safety. Regularly check for loose parts, oil and fuel leaks, and any signs of wear and tear. Change the oil and air filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, and keep the generator clean from debris.
  6. Carbon Monoxide Awareness: Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. Always operate your generator in a well-ventilated area to minimize the risk of CO buildup. Installing a carbon monoxide detector in your home is a prudent safety measure.
  7. Fire Safety: Generator safety includes precautions against fires. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and ensure the generator is equipped with a spark arrestor if you’re using it in a fire-prone area. Never use the generator in proximity to flammable materials.
  8. Avoid Water Exposure: Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. To prevent electric shocks and damage to the generator, never use it in wet conditions. If it starts raining during operation, shut it down immediately and move it to a dry location.
  9. Education and Training: Understanding your generator’s user manual is essential. Take the time to familiarize yourself with its features, operation, and safety recommendations. If you’re not confident in your abilities, consider seeking guidance from a professional.
  10. Respect Noise Regulations: Generators can be noisy, and there may be local noise regulations in your area. Respect these rules to avoid fines and neighborhood disputes. Consider using a generator noise enclosure or positioning the generator further away from living spaces.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the Westinghouse 9500 Generator is a reliable powerhouse that’s well-suited for those seeking a dependable source of backup power during outages. Its impressive 9500 running watts, user-friendly electric start, extended run time, and thoughtful features like the remote key fob make it a compelling choice. While it might be a bit on the heavier side and the remote start key fob could require periodic battery changes, these drawbacks are outweighed by its robust performance. If you prioritize reliability and performance during power outages, the Westinghouse 9500 Generator is an excellent investment to ensure that your home remains comfortably powered when you need it the most.

One thing that was not metioned is this is an autovolatge generator. It starts off on 240v, but if 240 is not need it downs to 120v. Why I bring this up is I have several inverter driven ductless ac. I was concerned but fears aside it powed the units just fine and the rest of my home.

I bought the dual fuel version of this. Oddly my free cover experience mirrors the above. The housing includes a number of weather protection features but the on/off switch was fried with a simple spay with a hose. Westinghouse wouldn't warrant the switch because I washed it. Other than that it's an awesome machine. I've never put gas in the tank instead using a standard propane tank. I love that I can get larger tanks to extend the runtime. Oil changes get a little messy because of an unfortunate drain location but running on propane the oil comes out looking new. My house is filled with natural gas appliances so this generator easily powers my whole house during outages. I have to try not to laugh while some neighbors run around hooking up extention cords to small units. Usually the power comes back before they're done but they have to do it in case the outage goes long. I loaned mine to a friend to power his construction site when the power couldn't get him temporary power. Again no problem for the machine.
